Entering Nirvana Posture

หลังจากที่พระพุทธเจ้าทรงบำเพ็ญพุทธกิจมาเป็นเวลา 45 พรรษา ในคืนที่จะปรินิพพาน ณ เตียงใต้ต้นสาละคู่หนึ่ง เมืองกุสินารา หลังจากที่ทรงแสดงธรรมและตอบข้อสงสัยในพระธรรมวินัยจนไม่มีใครสงสัยแล้ว ก็ได้ประทานโอวาทครั้งสุดท้ายแก่พุทธบริษัทที่มาประชุมกันในสถานที่นั้นว่า "ภิกษุทั้งหลาย บัดนี้เราขอเตือนพวกท่านว่า สังขาร คือสิ่งที่ปรุงแต่งขึ้นมานั้น ล้วนมีความเสื่อมสิ้นไปเป็นธรรมดา ขอท่านทั้งหลายทำกิจของตนและผู้อื่น ให้ถึงพร้อมด้วยความไม่ประมาทเถิด" จากนั้นพระพุทธองค์ทรงนิ่งเงียบ เข้าสู่ฌาณสมาบัติอันลึกไปโดยลำดับ ออกจากฌาณสมาบัติแล้วกลับเข้าอีก ในระหว่างนี้ก็เสด็จดับขันธปรินิพพาน ตรงกับวันเพ็ญเดือนวิสาขะ (เดือน 6) ก่อนพุทธศักราช 1 ปี

While the Lord Buddha was having his last sleep under the Sala trees in Kusinagara and after he had preached and answered all the questions to his followers, he preached his last sermon that "Bhikku, now I'd like to warn all of you that Sankhara which has been beautified are all deteriorating and decaying. So you should do good deeds for your own and others' sake without any carelessness". After that, the Lord Buddha became standstill and entered to the deep meditation. After that, he entered nirvana while being in deep meditation. The event took place on the 6th lunar month, or Visakha Day, one year prior to the beginning of Buddhist era.

พระพุทธเจ้าบรรทมครั้งสุดท้าย ณ เตียงที่ปรินิพพานระหว่างต้นสาละคู่หนึ่ง เมืองกสินารา หลังจากแสดงธรรม ตรัสถามข้อสงสัยในพระธรรมวินัยและตอบข้อสงสัยจนไม่มีใครข้องใจแล้ว พระพุทธองค์ก็ทรงประทานโอวาทว่า "ภิกษุทั้งหลาย สิ่งที่ถูกปรุงแต่งขึ้นทั้งหลาย (สังขาร) ย่อมสิ้นและเสื่อมสลายไปเป็นธรรมดา ขอให้พวกเธอทำประโยชน์ตนเองและผู้อื่นให้สำเร็จด้วยความไม่ประมาทเถิด" นับเป็นโอวาทครั้งสุดท้ายที่พระพุทธองค์ได้ประทางแก่มวลมนุษยชาติ

He preached his last sermon that "all the Sankhara would be naturally deteriorating. So you should do good deeds for your own and others' sake without any carelessness." That was the last sermon he had given to the mankind.

Making a Prophecy Posture

เมื่อพระพุทธเจ้าบรรทมครั้งสุดท้าย ระหว่างต้นสาละคู่หนึ่งนั้น พระอานนท์เถระผู้อุปัฎฐาก แม้จะทราบล่วงหน้าว่า พระพุทธองค์จะปรินิพพานในไม่ช้านี้ แต่ก็ไม่อาจจะยับยั้งความเศร้าโศกไว้ได้ จึงแอบไปยืนร้องไห้อยู่เพียงลำพัง พระพุทธองค์ได้ตรัสเรียกท่านมาปลอบว่า ความพลัดพรากจากสิ่งที่รักที่พอใจนั้น เป็นของธรรมดา ให้ละความเศร้าเสีย ตั้งใจปฏิบัติธรรม จากนั้นทรงสรรเสริญความดีของพระอานนท์โดยประการต่าง ๆ และทรงพยากรณ์ว่า พระอานนท์จักบรรลุธรรมเป็นพระอรหันต์ก่อนที่คณะสงฆ์จะทำปฐมสังคายนา

The Lord Buddha was having his last sleep in between the Sala trees, Ananda - the loyal attendant was so sorrow that he couldn't stop weeping, so he discreetly went out to cry. As the Lord Buddha acknowledged this, he preached to Ananda that to be seperated from the beloved one and satisfied situation is common phenomenon and one should leave the grievance and keep on practicing dhamma. Then, the Lord Buddha praised the good deeds of Ananda and made a prophecy that Ananda would realize dhamma and become arahant before the monk assembly would do the first amendment of his teachings.

Receiving Water Posture

หลังจากที่พระพุทธเจ้าเสวยภัตตาหารของนายจุนทะแล้ว ก็ประชวรหนัก ทรงอดกลั้นความเจ็บปวดไว้ด้วยพระสติสัมปชัญญะ ทรงเรียกพระอานนท์มารับสั่งจะเสด็จไปยังเมืองกุสินาราต่อไป เนื่องจากประชวรหนักจึงเหน็ดเหนื่อยมาก จึงต้องแวะพักระหว่างทาง ขณะนั้นมีพระประสงค์จะเสวยน้ำ จึงต้องแวะพักระหว่างทาง จึงรับสั่งให้พระอานนท์ไปนำน้ำมาถวาย แม่น้ำที่อยู่ใกล้เพิ่งมีเกวียนจำนวนมากข้ามผ่านไป ทำให้น้ำขุ่นมัวจนไม่สามารถจะดื่มได้ แต่ครั้นพระอานนท์นำบาตรไปตักมาถวาย น้ำกลับใสสะอาด ไม่ขุ่นมัวเป็นอัศจรรย์ พระพุทธองค์จึงเสสวยน้ำนั้น

After the Lord Buddha had eaten the food from Cunda, he fell ill seriously. But with his full consciousness, he endured the sufferings and told Ananda that he would continue proceeding to Kusinagara. But as he was so sick, so he felt exhausted and had to take a rest. At that time, he asked Ananda to get some water from the river. But the water was muddy because many carts had crossed the river. However, when the water was scooped from the river, it became clear and enabled the Lord Buddha to take it.

Bidding Farewell to Vaisali

นับจากตรัสรู้เป็นเวลาได้ 45 พรรษา ที่พระพุทธองค์เสด็จไปยังเมืองน้อยใหญ่ เพื่อเทศน์โปรดประชาชน ด้วยพระบาทเปล่าปราศจากพาหนะใด ๆ บัดนี้ พระองค์มีพระชนม์ 80 พรรษา จวนจะปรินิพพานแล้ว เช้าวันหนึ่ง หลังจากเสด็จกลับจากบิณฑบาตในเมืองเวสาลีแล้ว ทรงเอี้ยวพระวรกายฝืนพระพักตร์ทอดพระเนตรเมืองเวสาลีเป็นครั้งสุดท้าย เพราะจะไม่มีโอกาสเสด็จมายังเมืองเวสาลี รวมทั้งสถานที่อื่น ๆ ที่พระองค์เคยประทับบำเพ็ญพุทธกิจ การทอดพระเนตรครั้งนี้ นาคาวโลก คือการมองอย่างพญาช้าง (ช้างเหลียวหลัง)

For 45 years after he had achieved enlightment and he traveled extensively on bare feet to preach to people, then he became 80th years of age and nearly reached nirvana. One day, after the Lord Buddha had finished taking alms bowl from Vaisali, he looked back at the city for the last time because he wouldn't have chance to come back. Such the gesture is considered like the look of a great elephant.

Resolving to enter Nirvana Posture

เมื่อพระพุทธเจ้าประทับ ณ ปาวาลเจดีย์ เมืองเวสาลี ได้ตรัสกับมารผู้มาทูลอาราธนาให้ปรินิพพานความว่า "พระองค์จักปรินิพพานในอีกไม่ช้า นับแต่บัดนี้ไปอีกสามเดือน ตถาคตจักปรินิพพาน" เมื่อพระพุทธองค์รับสั่งดังนี้ (เรียกว่าปลงอายุสังขาร) ก็เกิดแผ่นดินไหวใหญ่อย่างน่าสะพรึงกลัว ขณะนั้นทรงเปล่งอุทานความว่า "ร่างกายอันไม่คงที่ เป็นที่สั่งสมกิเลส ปรุงแต่งให้เกิดขึ้นเรื่อยไปนี้ พระอริยเจ้าละไปได้ไม่อาลัย ยินดีในความสงบมีใจมั่นคง ทำลายกิเลสเหมือนนักรบทำลายเกราะของข้าศึกฉะนั้น"

When the Lord Buddha was staying at Pava Stupa in Vaisali, he said to Mara who asked him to enter Nirvana that "I am to enter nirvana so soon. Just three months from now on, I'm to reach nirvana. As he had said so, there was a big earthquake. At that moment, he said: "This impermanent body is the cause of lustful desire, I can leave it without any regret. I'm glad in the peacefulness with stable state of mind that can destroy the lustful desire just like the warrior destroyed the enemies." The Buddha reflected upon his old age and imminent death. Three months before his death he resolved to enter Nirvana on the night of full moon.

Expounding on Omens (Having Foresight) Posture

พระพุทธเจ้าทรงแสดงนิมิตที่ชัดเจน หรืออย่างโอฬารเพื่อที่จะแสดงอานุภาพของอิทธิบาท 4 ของพระองค์ ซึ่งทำให้มีอายุได้ตลอดกัลป์หรือเกินกว่านั้นก็ได้ ทั้งนี้เพื่อให้พระอานนท์ทูลอาราธนาให้ดำรงพระชนมายุอยู่ตลอดกัลป์ก่อนที่มารจะทูลอาราธนาให้ปรินิพพาน แต่พระอานนท์มิรู้ทันเพราะถูกมารดลใจ จึงมิได้ทูลอาราธนา พระพุทธองค์ทรงแสดงนิมิตทำนองนี้ในสถานที่ต่าง ๆ ถึง 16 ครั้ง

The Lord Buddha performed the vivid omens as to show the power of iddhippada 4 (the Four Paths of Accomplishment) that he could prolong his life if he was asked to do so. He hinted that to Ananda but Ananda did not understand because he was being haunted and influenced by Mara. Therefore, the Buddha sent Ananda away and predicted his imminent death and entry of Nirvana. The Lord Buddha hinted such this 16 times in different places.
