ครั้งหนึ่ง พระพุทธเจ้าประทับ ณ วัดเชตวัน เมืองสาวัตถี มีกษัตริย์องหนึ่งชื่อว่าอาฬวี ครองนครอาฬวี ชอบล่าสัตว์มาก วันหนึ่งพลัดหลงจากอำมาตย์เข้าไปในเขตหวงห้ามของอาฬวกยักษ์ ซึ่งอาศัยอยู่ในต้นไทรใหญ่คืนหนึ่ง เมื่อถูกยักษ์จับกินเป็นอาหารก็ขอชีวิตโดยจะส่งคนมาให้ยักษ์กินทุกวัน ขณะที่มีการส่งส่วยโดยใช้ชีวิตคนสังเวยให้แก่ยักษ์นั้น พระพุทธเจ้าได้เสด็จไปยังที่อยู่ของยักษ์ ทรมานยักษ์ให้ลดอหังการลงแล้ว ทรงแสดงโปรดชาวเมืองนั้น ให้มนุษย์และยักษ์อยู่ด้วยกันด้วยเมตตาจิต ยักษ์ก็ช่วยดูแลคุ้มครองมนุษย์ ส่วนมนุษย์ก็ให้นับถือยักษ์เหมือนเทวดารักษาพระนคร

When the Lord Buddha was staying at Jetavana temple in Svatthi, there was a King named Alavi who ruled over Alavi country. He liked hunting so much. Then, one day, he was lost from his followers and entered the land of Yakkha Alavaka who lived in a Banyan tree. When the giant was about to eat him, the King had asked for life. He vowed that he would send someone to serve the giant every day. At that time, the Lord Buddha was staying at the land of the giant and he wanted to lower the giant's ego. He preached to the giant and taught people to stay in harmony and be merciful toward each other.
