ครั้งหนึ่งพระพุทธเจ้าตรัสแก่พระอานนท์ที่เชตวันว่า เมื่อพระพุทธเจ้าเกิดขึ้น เจ้าลัทธิต่าง ๆ ก็หมดความน่าเชื่อถือ และได้ทรงเปล่งอุทานว่า พอพระอาทิตย์ขึ้น หิ่งห้อยก็อับแสง เมื่อมีผู้ตรัสรู้จริงเกิดขึ้น พวกที่รู้แบบนึกคิดเอาเองก็หมดความน่าเชื่อถือ ความรู้ของพวกเขาไม่ทำให้จิตใจบริสุทธิ์ได้ และไม่พ้นจากทุกข์ไปเลย ในที่นี้ ลัทธิต่างๆ มากมายนั้นก็เปรียบเหมือนพนัสบดีสัตว์ประหลาด คำสอนของพระพุทธเจ้าทำให้ผู้ปฏิบัติตามพ้นทุกข์ได้จริง

Once, the Lord Buddha said to Ananda at Jetavana that when Buddha came into existence, all other sects lost their credibility. He then proclaimed that when the sun rises, the fly fries all disappear. When there's a real enlightenment, those who knew by their own thinking all lost their credibility. Their knowledge could not pure the mind and free anyone from sufferings. In this regard, other sects are compared to Banaspati - the strange creature. The Lord Buddha's teachings can free the followers from all sufferings than the teachings of any other sects.
