เนื่องมาจากพระภิกษุแห่งเมืองโกสัมพี ทะเลาะกันด้วยเรื่องเล็กน้อยที่ทำให้เป็นเรื่องใหญ่โต พระพุทธเจ้าตรัสสอนให้สามัคคีกันเท่าไรก็ไม่ยอมเชื่อเพราะต่างฝ่ายต่างยึดถือในความคิดตนเป็นใหญ่ พระพุทธเจ้าทรงระอาพระทัยจึงเสด็จหนีไปจำพรรษาอยู่ป่ารักขิตวัน แถบหมู่บ้านปาริเลยยกะ ณ ที่นั่นมีช้างชื่อ ปาริเลยยหะและลิงตัวหนึ่งคอยอุปัฎฐากอยู่ ทรงแสดงให้เห็นว่า ถ้าไม่ได้สหายที่ดีและมีปัญญาแล้ว บางครั้งการอยู่คนเดียวก็ดีกว่าที่จะคลุกคลีอยู่กับคนพาล

When the monks in Kosampi had a big quarrel over a small matter. The Lord Buddha tried to teach them about harmony but they didn't listen as they stuck to their opinion. The Lord Buddha felt tired so he escaped to Palilaya forest where there was an elephant named Palilayaka and a monkey to help him. This is to show that sometimes it's better to be alone if one could not find a good, wise friend.
