ครั้งหนึ่ง ในฤดูหนาว อากาศหนาวจัดตลอดคืน มีน้ำค้างตกหนักในตอนเช้า พระพุทธเจ้าประทับ ณ โคตมเจดีย์ เมืองเวสาลี เมื่อจะทดลองความหนาวจึงทรมห่มจีวรซ้อนกันและทรงทราบดีว่า จีวร 3 ผืนจึงจะพอทนความหนาวขนาดนี้ได้ ทรงอนุญาตให้พระภิกษุใช้จีวร 3 ผืนได้ เรียกว่า "ไตรจีวร" ตั้งแต่บัดนั้นมา

In a winter time, the temperature was freezing all through the night and the dew dropped a lot in the morning. The Lord Buddha was staying at Kotama Stupa of Vaisali. He experimented wearing three layers of monk robe and acknowledged that it was thick enough to tolerate the coldness. He then allowed the monks to use three robes. Since then, it was called "Tri Monk Robe".
