สมัยหนึ่ง พระพุทธรูปประทับ ณ วัดเวฬุวัน กรุงราชคฤห์ พระภิกษุรูปหนึ่งชื่อว่า โคธิกะ ปฏิบัติธรรมจนได้สัมผัสกับความหลุดพ้นด้วยใจเป็นครั้งคราว แต่ก็เสื่อมจากมรรคผลที่ได้บ่อย ๆ เพราะท่านมีโรคเรื้อรังชนิดหนึ่ง ในที่สุดท่านคิดจะฆ่าตัวตาย ในขณะที่ท่านจะสิ้นลมหายใจ ท่านหมดความห่วงใยในชีวิต และบรรลุพระอรหันต์พร้อมกับสารจิตดวงสุดท้าย ฝ่ายมารได้แปลงตนเป็นกลุ่มควันและก้อนเมฆเที่ยวหาปฏิสนธิวิญญาณของพระโคธิกะ แต่ไม่พบ พระพุทธองค์ทรงชี้ให้ภิกษุดูและตรัสว่า มารไม่มีวันที่จะได้พบวิญญาณของพระโคธิกะ เพราะท่านปรินิพพานแล้ว

While the Lord Buddha was staying at Veluvana monastery, in Rajagaha, there was a monk named Godhika had meditated until he occasionally became enlightened. However, he suffered from a certain kind of illness so he often slipped from the enlightened state which upset him so much that he wanted to commit suicide. But when he came to the final moment of his life, he suddenly released all the attachment in life and became enlightened at his very last breath. The evil which disguised itself in form of smoke and clouds had tried to catch the spirit of the deceased Godhika monk but all in vain. The Lord Buddha had pointed his index finger to the sky and told the evil that they wouldn't be able to find the spirit of Godhika monk as he had reached nirvana already.
