ครั้งหนึ่ง พระพุทธเจ้าประทับอยู่ ณ วัดเวฬุวัน มีกุลบุตรจากตระกูลพราหมณ์เมืองสาวัตตถีคนหนึ่ง นามว่า วักกลิ พึงพอใจในพระรูปอันงดงามของพระพุทธเจ้า จึงออกบวชเพราะต้องการจะดูรูปสมบัติของพระพุทธเจ้า หลังจากบวชแล้วก็ได้แต่เฝ้ามองพระพุทธองค์ไม่ศึกษาสมถวิปัสสนา จนพระพุทธองค์ตรัสโอวาทว่า ไม่มีประโยชน์ที่จะมาเฝ้าดูกายนี้ ผู้ใดเห็นธรรมผู้นั้นเห็นเรา ผู้ใดเห็นเรา ผู้นั้นเห็นธรรม แต่พระวักกลิก็ไม่อาจละการดูรูปของพระพุทธเจ้า ในที่สุดทรงขับไล่พระวักกลิเพื่อให้คิดได้ ทำให้พระวักกลิน้อยใจจนคิดฆ่าตัวตาย ต่อมาได้รับการปลอบโยนจากพระพุทธเจ้า เกิดปิติและได้บรรลุพระอรหันต์ในที่สุดได้รับการสรรเสริญจากพระพุทธองค์ว่า เลิศกว่าภิกษุทั้งหลายในด้านสัทธาธิมุต เป็นผู้พ้นจากกิเลสด้วยศรัทธา

When the Lord Buddha was staying at Veluvana-monastery, there was a Brahman son from Savatthi named Vakkali who fell into the look of the Buddha, so he decided to enter the monkhood as to get close and admire the Buddha. After he had ordained as a monk, he didn't practice dhamma but only kept admiring the Buddha's look and did nothing else, so the Buddha chased him away. Vakkali was so sad that he wanted to commit suicide. Buddha then had to console him and preached him until he finally attained arahantship. Later, the Buddha praised him for being able to free himself from all lustful desire due to his strong faith in the Buddha's teaching.
