พระพุทธรูปปางรำพึง

หลังจากที่ตรัสรู้แล้วไม่นาน ขณะที่ประทับอยู่ใต้ต้นไทร (อขปาลนิโครธ) พระพุทธองค์ทรงรำพึงว่า พระธรรมที่ได้ตรัสรู้นั้นละเอียดลึกซึ้ง ยากที่จะเข้าใจและนำไปปฏิบัติสำหรับคนทั่วไป จึงทรงรู้สึกท้อพระทัยที่จะแสดงธรรมโปรดสัตว์ แต่ด้วยพระมหากรุณา พระองค์ได้พิจารณาเห็นว่า สรรพสัตว์นั้นมีอุปนิสัยแตกต่างกันไป เปรียบได้ดังดอกบัวในน้ำ บางดอกอยู่เหนือน้ำ บางดอกอยู่ปริ่มน้ำ และบางดอกอยู่ในน้ำ จึงทรงดำริที่จะแสดงธรรมตามอุปนิสัยแห่งสัตว์นั้น ๆ

A short period after the enlightment, while the Buddha stayed under the Banyan tree, he stated that it was too difficult for ordinary people to understand dhamma and bring it into practices. He was discouraged to teach dhamma, then. However, with his great mercy and loving-kindness, he clearly understood that living creatures possessed different habits just like a lotus. Some were above water, some were flush with water and some were under water. Therefore, he decided to teach dhamma in different style that fit each living creature's habits.
