หลังจากที่พ่อค้าทั้ง 2 คน คือ ตปุสสะและภัลลิกะ แด่พระพุทธเจ้าและได้นับถือพระพุทธเจ้า และพระธรรมว่าเป็นที่พึ่งสูงสุดในชีวิตแล้ว ได้ทูลขอของที่ระลึกจากพระพุทธองค์เพื่อไว้บูชา พระพุทธเจ้าทรงลูบพระเกศา (ผม) ด้วยพระหัตถ์ขวา มีเกศา 8 เส้นหล่นบนฝ่าพระหัตถ์ จึงโปรดประทานพระเกศาทั้ง 8 เส้นนั้นแก่พ่อค้าทั้งสอง

After two merchants - Tapussa and Bhallika - had offered Sattu and roasted Sattu to the Great Buddha, they held the Lord Buddha and dharma as the last resort in their lives. They requested relics from the Lord Buddha for veneration. The Buddha stroked his hair with his right hand. Then, there were eight strands of hairs falling on his hand. He gave them to the merchants.
