ในขณะที่พระพุทธเจ้ายังประทับอยู่ใต้ต้นไม้เกต (ราชายนพฤกษ์) มีพ่อค้า 2 คน ชื่อ ตปุสสะ และภัลลิกะ เดินทางผ่านมาพบพระพุทธองค์ประทับอยู่ใต้ต้นไม้นั้นด้วยอาการสงบและเอิบอิ่มยิ่ง จึงได้ถวายอาหารที่เป็นเสบียงเดินทางของตนที่มีทั้งชนิดก้อนและชนิดผงเรียกว่า "สัตตุก้อนสัตตุผง" เลื่อมใสในพระดำรัสและความสง่างามของพระองค์ใต้ทูลขอเป็นสาวกรับเอาพระพุทธเจ้าและพระธรรมเป็นที่พึ่งที่นับถือสูงสุดในชีวิต จึงนับเป็นอุบาสกคู่แรกในโลก

While the Lord Buddha sat under Rajayatana tree, there were two merchants named Tapussa and Bhallika who came across the Buddha who was sitting under the tree in admirably calm and peaceful manner. So they made the food offerings which comprised of roasted Sattu and powered Sattu. With strong faith in the Buddha's teaching and his magnificent gesture, they requested to become his followers with the Dharma as the last resort in their lives. So they became the first Upasakas (male disciples) of Buddhist religion.
