Listening to Three-String Harp Posture


อุปมาที่สำคัญเกี่ยวกับการปฏิบัติทางสายกลาง (มัชฌิมาปฎิปทา) คืออุปมาเรื่องพิณสามสาย ในพุทธประวัติเล่าว่าพระอินทร์ทรงดีดพิณสามสายถวายแด่พระมหาบุรุษ ในขณะที่พระองค์แสวงหาหนทางแห่งการหลุดพ้น ทำให้พระองค์เห็นชัดในพระทัยว่า การปฏิบัติย่อหย่อนเกินไป และการปฏิบัติที่เคร่งครัดจนเกินไปนั้น (กาม-สุขัลลิกานุโยค และอัตตกิลมถานุโยคา) มิใช่วิธีที่จะนำไปสู่ความหลุดพ้นแน่นอน ทางสายกลางหรือมัชฌิมาปฏิปทาเท่านั้น จึงจะเป็นหนทางแห่งการตรัสรู้ เปรียบดังพิณสามสายที่พอดีไม่หย่อนไม่ตึงเกินไป จึงจะให้เสียงที่ไพเราะเสนาะโสต

Listening to three-string-harp was a major metaphor of the Middle Path, Majihima-patipada. There was a story in "the life-story of the Buddha" saying, while the Great Man was searching for salvation. God Indra played three-string harp for him. The performance made him realized that Sensual Indulgence, Kamasukhallikanuyoga and Self-Mortification. Attakilamatanuyoga, were not a way to salvation. The Middle Path or Majjhima-patipada was the only way to enlightenment. It was like the strings of the harp. To produce a beautiful sound the strings had to be moderate not too taut and not too slack
