สมัยก่อนพุทธศักราช 80 ปี เมื่อพระนางสิริมหามายา อัครมเหสีของพระเจ้าสุโธทนะ ทรงพระครรภ์แก่จวนจะประสูตร มีพระประสงค์จะเสด็จไปประสูติที่ราชตระกูลเดิมของพระองค์

ตามประเพณี ครั้นขบวนเสด็จถึงลุมพินีวัน อยู่ระหว่างกรุงกบิลพัสดุ์และกรุงเทวทหะ พระนางก็ประชวรพระครรภ์จะประสูติ เหล่าราชบริพารที่ตามเสด็จ จึงจัดที่ประสูติถวาย ณ โคน

ต้นสาละใหญ่ต้นหนึ่ง พระโพธิสัตว์กุมารจึงประสูติจากพระครรภ์มารดาที่ลุมพินีวัน ตรงกับวันเพ็ญ เดือนวิสาขะ

Eighty years before the Buddha era, pregnant Queen Sirimahamaya, the chief queen consort of King Suddhodana of Kapilavatthu, felt that her time of delivery drew near. She then followed the traditions to go back to her parental home in Devadaha to give birth to her child. When she reached Lumbini Park, located between the two cities, the labor pain began. Her attendants prepared a place for the delivery under the Sala tree. In Lumbini, Prince Siddhattha was born during the full moon of Visakha, the sixth lunar month.
